MS Shelton received assistance with restoring her power

Partner: Peter Paul Development Center

Advisor: Chimere Miles

Ms. Shelton and her son have been staying with family after their electricity was turned off due to an unpaid bill. Despite working hard and doing all she can, unexpected financial strain made it harder for Ms. Shelton to keep with this essential expense. Her family has stepped in to help, managing to raise enough to cover half the bill. However, the remaining balance is still needed to fully restore power. With your support, Ms. Shelton and her son can return to their safe and stable environment called home.

Eliza received assistance with overdraft fees

Partner: Safe Harbor

Advisor: Cara Boim

Eliza is a survivor of human trafficking. While she was being trafficked, she was coerced into making numerous overdraft transactions and the trafficker would use her bank account to make his own transactions. This resulted in overdrafts more than $500. The bank has put an alert in all bank systems which is precluding Eliza from opening any accounts. Eliza is currently in school and needs to deposit a stipend check for student loans. In addition, she will need to open a checking account as she will retain employment shortly. We are graciously asking for a donation of $500 to clear the alert and help Eliza continue her success with school and retaining employment.

Jason received Id and Birth Certificate

Partner: Caritas

Advisor: Shereida Archie

Jason, currently residing at Caritas’ men’s shelter, is diligently working to transition out of homelessness. Born in New York, a critical document is missing – his birth certificate. This seemingly small piece of paper is essential for him to obtain a Virginia state ID, a prerequisite for finalizing the several job offers he has already received. Without a valid ID, Jason’s path to employment and, subsequently, permanent housing is blocked. He is seeking $175 through the Giving Wall to directly address these immediate needs: the cost of acquiring his birth certificate from New York, the fees for his Virginia ID, and a necessary pair of work shoes. By contributing to this request, you will provide Jason with the tangible tools he needs to accept employment, earn a steady income, and take meaningful steps towards a secure and independent future. Your generosity will offer Jason more than just financial assistance; it will provide him with dignity and a renewed sense of hope.

Asia received Birth Certificate

Partner: Caritas

Advisor: Donnell Wright

Ms. Asia is living with cerebral palsy and is currently unable to work. Despite our efforts to secure disability benefits on her behalf, her initial application was denied, and we are now preparing to appeal the decision with Social Security. At this time, Ms. Asia has no source of income. She is actively reaching out to her community for support in recovering essential identification documents such as her birth certificate, Social Security card, and state ID. Without these documents, she is unable to access programs designed to assist individuals in her situation, and valuable opportunities are slipping through the cracks. Although her medical condition presents significant challenges, Ms. Asia remains determined to contribute and be productive. As she puts it, “I can’t just sit and rot.” Her resilience and desire to work, despite medical advice to the contrary, highlight her strength and motivation in the face of adversity.

Elise received assistance with transportation and beds for her children

Partner: St. Joseph's Villa

Advisor: Drew Melson

Elise is a determined 24-year-old mother of two who’s doing everything she can to build a better life for her family. She's taken big steps forward and recently secured stable housing, but transportation remains a major barrier. Without a car, she relies heavily on Lyft and Uber to get to work, appointments, and childcare. These rides are expensive and consume much of her income. She dreams of driving her own car, but challenges related to ADD have made it difficult for her to pass the driving test. Elise would greatly appreciate assistance with enrolling in driving classes, where one-on-one instruction can give her the support she needs to pass the test and the gain the independence she's been working so hard for. As her family settles into their new home, Elise is also in need of beds for her children, so they can have a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

Ms.Cox received assistance with utility bill

Partner: Peter Paul Development Center

Advisor: Chimere Miles

Imagine sitting with a 13-year-old child waiting to be prepped for a 9-hr surgery. A surgery that not only save their life but also everything from the waist down. This is the room that Ms. Cox sat in with her child. To be present in the room sacrifices were made in the form of missed days from school and work which resulted in things like the electric bill being unpaid. Ms. Cox used her small savings to ensure their home still could exist. Your generosity and support will go towards ensuring the lights remain on while mom and child transition from one room back to their rooms at home.

Steven received work clothes

Partner: Caritas

Advisor: Shereida Archie

It must be challenging for Steven to arrive in a new city and immediately face the lack of basic necessities like suitable clothing and shoes. Being at Caritas men's shelter and wanting to find employment is a positive step, and it's completely understandable that not having appropriate attire would create a significant barrier. Seeking help from the Giving Wall for something as fundamental as boxer briefs (size 2x) and pants (size 42) speaks to Steven's immediate needs. Having these items wouldn't just be about physical comfort; it would be about equipping him with the basics he needs to present himself confidently as he looks for work in Richmond. Feeling prepared can make a huge difference in someone's motivation and self-assurance when facing the job search. Hopefully, the Giving Wall can provide Steven with this essential support, giving him a better chance to secure employment and start building a new life here.

David received Clothing

Partner: Caritas

Advisor: Shereida Archie

It's tough to imagine arriving at a shelter with nothing but the clothes on your back. David's situation highlights how essential even basic necessities like clothing can be for someone's dignity and well-being. While he waits for his disability determination and navigates life at Caritas men's shelter, having a pair of pants in size 36 waist and a few shirts in size 2x from the Giving Wall could truly make a significant impact. Beyond just the physical comfort these items would provide, it sounds like having clothes that fit would also offer David a much-needed sense of normalcy and belonging. Feeling like you fit in can be so important for self-esteem, especially during a challenging time. Hopefully, the Giving Wall can come through for David and provide him with these simple yet crucial items, helping him feel a bit more comfortable and confident as he moves forward.

Ms. Davis received assistance with purchasing a computer for school.

Partner: Peter Paul Development Center

Advisor: Chimere Miles

Ms. Davis made a promise to herself and children that one day she would re-enroll in school and complete the steps to obtain her GED. We are happy to share that the promise has been kept and that Ms.Davis is currently a student. At some point we all have had to figure out how to prioritize our needs VS things that we want. Now that Ms. Green is a student; she is required to have access to technology. Being able to purchase a laptop will allow her to stay on top of assignments and connect timely with instructors. Having access to technology will also spring her into the next step in her professional journey.
